about

Shorty & The Giants is the latest album from Canada’s own Sheri Weldon. It’s a jazz record firmly rooted in the Bebop tradition with numbers from Thelonius Monk, Charlie Parker, and Dizzy Gillespie, but also incorporating the Cool Jazz sound of the sixties era. There’s a thoroughly modern take on the 1960’s hit A Taste of Honey and the breezy bossa nova, An Ocean View, written by John MacMurchy/Tia Brazda in 2017.
The album title Shorty & The Giants is a tongue-in-cheek reference to Sheri’s nickname and a supporting cast of great musicians. Pianist Mark Eisenman, as an accompanist, is a singer’s dream and also an amazing soloist; bassist Pat Collins is solid, intuitive and harmonically adventurous; drummer Daniel Barnes is a groove meister and a master of tonal colour; John MacMurchy, on woodwinds, is a fine soloist and arranger who approaches a melody like a singer. These giants of jazz have whipped up a roiling cauldron of energy on tunes like A Night In Tunisia and Yardbird Suite as well as an introspective tenderness on ballads like Monk's, Ruby My Dear. The result is a perfect setting for Sheri's outstanding vocals and this combination creates the cool vibe you will hear on this record. Shorty & The Giants was recorded live in the studio to achieve the immediacy and atmosphere of recordings from the fifties and sixties. It sure was a lot of fun!
